Alabama Military
Alabama Military: Alabama is a southeastern U.S. state that’s home to significant military landmarks and events from the Civil War, World War I and World War II, all the way through history to space travel.
U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum: This Museum is operated by the Alabama Center of Military History and is dedicated to promoting and disseminating the accomplishments of American military men and women. The emphasis is on participants of World War I and subsequent conflicts. The survivors and families can use the Museum facilities to reminisce on their own experiences and those of parents, grandparents, and other close relatives. There are displays – more than 30 historical military vehicles from World War I to the present, as well as tableaus, artifacts, and other memorabilia dating back to the Revolutionary War. Supporting organizations include the 19th Alabama Infantry which sponsors exhibits from 18th and 19th Century conflicts, and the 8th Air Force Historical Society, which sponsors a Bomb Group briefing room. Both organizations support ‘living history’ presentations on many Saturdays. At the Museum is a reference library, in addition to published material such as the Seventh Army After Action Report from World War II. The library offers written and oral reminiscences of Alabama veterans. In this vein, veterans and their families are invited to send written material or audio cassette tapes to the Museum for inclusion in the library. A narrative by the veteran, or an interview by a relative, will provide a legacy of the contribution. The Museum welcomes the participation of military and veterans’ groups and individuals in making this a valued educational piece of history in Huntsville.
USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park: At this Battleship Memorial Park, you don’t have to look very far to find heroes. From the Battleship USS ALABAMA to the Submarine USS DRUM and over 25 aircraft, the spirit of military pride is alive and well. Aboard the battleship you will be able to explore 12 decks. Among those, you can climb inside gun turrets, get locked in the Brig, man a 12mm gun and much more. Also at the park, you will be able to go below and explore the oldest Submarine on display, the USS DRUM. In the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion as well as in the park, you will be able to view many rare and historic aircraft. A few in the collection include a A-12 Blackbird Spy Plane, OS2U Kingfisher, F-86L Sabre Jet, and B-52 Bomber, just to name a few. While in the pavilion, don’t forget to take a ride on the Flight Simulator and experience flight without ever leaving the ground. It’s an unforgettable experience for the entire family. All tours are self-guided. Allow approx. 2.5 hours to really see what it was like to be on this battleship when on active duty in Mobile.
United States Army Aviation Museum: The U.S. Army Aviation Museum maintains a collection of over 160 military aircraft, including one of the largest collections of military helicopters in the world. Approximately 50 beautifully restored, historic, and one-of-a-kind aircraft are proudly displayed both inside the Museum exhibit space and outside on the grounds. The collection includes many significant examples of early research efforts and developments in rotary wing technology and the evolution of the helicopter. Represented is the Army’s involvement in military aviation from the Wright brothers, the early combat aircraft of WW I, and today’s technological machines such as the AH-64 Apache and the UH-60 Blackhawk. You’ll find this in Ft Rucker.
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC): This is a Smithsonian Affiliate and the Official Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. On Display, they have one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia anywhere in the world. Guests journey through America’s Space Race and NASA’s plan to put man on the moon. Witness the development of the space shuttle program and the International Space Station, get a glimpse of the future in commercial space ventures, and the latest technological innovations. The Rocket Center regularly features traveling exhibits from around the world. Also, enjoy daily films on the 67-foot screen in Huntsville’s only full-dome IMAX® Theater or in the 52-foot, high-definition screen in the National Geographic Theater. Finally, plan a ride on the motorcoach tour of Redstone Arsenal, headquarters to the Army Material Command and home of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Travel to Huntsville to enjoy.

Alabama Gardens
Alabama Gardens- Come witness the beautiful colors and varieties of flowers and plants as we travel to Alabama for a look. There are 13 varieties of gardens located all over the state. Call us to help you create that springtime Alabama adventure! Or maybe you would rather witness the fall colors instead.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens: A cherished place of respite and inspiration since 1962, these Gardens promote a passion for plants, gardens, and the natural world. Located in the heart of Birmingham, this 67-acre urban oasis offers beautiful blooms, glorious specialty gardens, and opportunities to grow your green thumb throughout the year. The Gardens are free and open to the public every day of the year. A facility of the Parks and Recreation Board, these Botanical Gardens are the result of a public-private partnership between the city the nonprofit Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Beautiful gardens with lots of incredible plants and water features and benches to sit and take it all in and it’s also right across from the zoo. It’s a beautiful place to take a walk, read a book, have a picnic, or take photos. The gift shop is lovely as well. Found in the city of Birmingham.
Dunn Formal Rose Garden: This Rose Garden is an official All-America Rose Selection Display Garden. It features tea roses, floribundas, grandifloras, climbers, miniatures and shrub types that bloom in glorious colors from late April until frost. You’ll see old favorites such as ‘Peace’, ‘Chrysler Imperial’, and ‘John F. Kennedy’ mingle with newcomers like ‘All That Jazz’, ‘Dolly Parton’ and ‘Fourth of July’; our bounty of roses has made this spot a mainstay attraction since The Gardens first opened in Birmingham.
Hess Camellia Garden: Another beautiful site, this Shade Garden and the Japanese Garden are found at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Come and enjoy the diversity these gardens offer.
Huntsville Botanical Garden: The 112-acre Botanical Garden is open year-round and contains a diverse ecosystem of meadows, upland and bottomland forest, and wetlands, as well as a variety of specialty gardens and native plant collections. The Mathews Nature Trail contains the largest accredited trillium collection in the U.S. and the Anderson Education Center is home to the nation’s largest open-air butterfly house. The Native Plants Teaching Garden is a public space that highlights the way local plants, soil, pollinators, and birds create distinct communities and how they interact to form a diverse, sustainable, and attractive landscape. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Garden is a member of the American Public Gardens Association of North America. Discover this garden in Huntsville.
Dothan Area Botanical Gardens: Serene retreat featuring 50 acres of lush, manicured gardens with ponds & shady walking trails. It is on the smaller side but for $5 a person it was well worth the money! There is a gorgeous Asian garden and tropical plant house. You can see a good variety of roses, camellias, and herbs, too. There are paved walkways for a very peaceful and quiet stroll on a Sunday morning. For the children, there is a kid zone which everyone loves. Found in town Dothan north of Atlanta.
Aldridge Gardens: This spot is amazing. Wonderful accessible walking trails, a hands-on bonsai educational opportunity, a Veterans Memorial Arbor and Pentagon Plaza with beautiful views of the lake, also a great place to take a run in the park – and just adorable geese or ducks! They also have a venue you can rent for events. Come experience the beauty and hospitality the city of Hoover has to offer.
Cornerstone Gardens: This garden is a beautiful hidden gem! You might very well love all the Bible verses throughout the garden! Cornerstone Gardens and Arboretum was created as a place of meditation, rest, and reflection for Carriage House Repose & Restore, Inc., a Christian support ministry for ministers, missionaries, and evangelists. The Carriage House is situated on the property close to the gardens, and the pastors and others come to stay there as a short-term respite. The caretakers and stewards of the Carriage House ministry have opened the gardens to the general public to share the natural beauty and wonder of over 5,000 plants and trees comprised of over 150 different species. Alabama State Parks:
Alabama State Parks: Alabama is a southeastern U.S. state that’s home to significant landmarks from the American Civil Rights Movement. The Rosa Parks Museum, dedicated to the activist, can be found in the capital of Montgomery.
Gulf State Park: This Park has two miles of beaches to greet you with plenty of white sun-kissed sand, surging surf, seagulls, and seashells, but there is more than sand and surf to sink your toes into. Inside Gulf State Park there is a brand-new Gulf Front Lodge and Conference Center, a beach pavilion, the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World Cottages, tennis courts, 154 camp sites, 28 miles of paved/enhance trails and a fishing pier that is 20-feet wide and extends 1,512 feet into the Gulf. This and much more make Gulf State Park the perfect in-state vacation or out-of-state adventure. Located in Gulf Shores.
DeSoto State Park: In the rustic tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), mountainous Desoto State Park is accented by many rushing waterfalls and fragrant wildflowers. The park was developed by the CCC in the late 1930s and the atmosphere of the Corps enhances many areas, including the Lodge, restaurant, and cabins. There are numerous lodging and camping options. Amenities include a restaurant, meeting rooms, pavilions, picnic area, playground, swimming pool, Benefield Nature Center, a CCC museum, and much more. A large selection of events are available such as campfire talks, classes, demonstrations, etc. DeSoto Falls, a 104ft waterfall, is one of the park’s biggest attractions. Enjoy fishing, hiking, and biking. A spectacular place to visit while enjoying the state part – and not too far away – is the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Also surrounded by the scenic beauty of Lookout Mountain, the waterfalls are absolutely majestic. Drive through the canyon, down the mountain and behold what you might consider the Grand Canyon of Alabama, it’s spectacular. There’s plenty of scenic pull offs for photo ops, and a visitor Center where you can get a map. The state park and canyon are located In Fort Payne.
Richwood Caverns State Park – Experience the thrill of the “miracle mile” of underground caverns! The 260-million-year-old limestone formations, blind cave fish and underground pool are just a few of the natural wonders exhibited in the colorful cavern. The park features an Olympic-size swimming pool, snack bar, picnic area, large and small picnic shelter, hiking trails, playground, campground, and gift shop. These caverns are a member of the National Caves Association and offers visually interesting living geological formations. The caverns themselves were water-formed,” as mineral-laden water droplets build colorful structures and flowstones and reveals that it was carved from an ocean bed – shell fragments and fossils of marine life are clearly visible along the ceiling and walls. Many curiosities are featured on guided tours and special groups of 20 or more – during the season – can be arranged by appointment. There are 13 developed campsites, landscaped for trailers and motor homes with comfort facilities. Meeting rooms are available as well as a snack bar dining area. The Olympic size swimming pool is open from May to September. Located in Warrior.
Tannehill State Park – Nature has blessed Tannehill. The beautiful 1500-acre tree-lined valley, hillsides rich in ore and swiftly flowing Roupes Creek made this a perfect setting for a successful iron making operation spanning three counties. The same ingredients afford todays visitors a pleasurable escape from modern life for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation. A miniature railroad chugs through the pines. From spring to fall, the blacksmith, miller, and other craftsmen demonstrate their trades. Craft shops occupy restored pioneer cabins and artisans chat with visitors from their front porches. The cotton gin, pioneer farm and working gristmill preserve a long-gone way of life. It’s difficult to take it all in with one visit. Campground accommodations, both primitive and improved, are plentiful. Horseback riding excursions are available on beautiful trails. From March to November on the 3rd weekend, shoppers and swappers come from far and near to Trade Days in search of tools, clothing, jewelry, furniture, and other treasures. Other events include a Gem and Mineral show, Woodcarvers show, Educational programs for school children, a Labor Day celebration, Halloween festival, and a Christmas candlelight tour. Located in central Alabama near McCalla.

Fort Morgan State Historic Site: Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, the site has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Used intermittently through the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country. Great historic site to wander around and visualize how soldiers during the Civil War and WWI lived and defended Mobile Bay. The small museum provided an excellent overview of events that occurred. Artifacts on displays and information was interesting and easy to read. Visit while in Fort Morgan.

Alabama Museums
Alabama Museums – Alabama’s nicknamed the Yellowhammer State, after the state bird, and the state flower is the camellia. The museums around the state of Alabama are a wonderful addition to any trip. Please plan your visit to begin around 10am and finish at 4pm or so, when visiting the various Alabama Museums.
Muscle Shoals Sound Museum: Our iconic recording studio opened in 1969 when studio musicians now known as The Swampers – David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins – left FAME Studio and started their own operation. Fully restored to its 1969 look thanks to a grant from Beats Electronics, the studio is open for tours and is once again a fully functioning recording studio at night. A wide array of merchandise is also available in store and online with new designs and the classic duds worn by Mick Jagger, Bog Seger, Willie Nelson, Linda Rondstadt, Rod Stewart, etc. Tour guides start in the basement where the publishing offices were, proceed to the main studio and end in the gift shop of course! There are numerous Swamper sightings! Group tour rates are available, and the studio is open to requests for special events and occasions like weddings and birthday bashes. We are not your typical hands-off museum. We encourage people to play the piano where Old Time Rock and Roll was recorded! Located in Sheffield, AL.
Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum: A motorcyclist’s dream, this museum has 750 vintage and modern motorcycles displayed on walls, two-tiered platforms and just about everywhere you look! The bikes are displayed randomly, rather than by date and year, adding an element of unpredictability to the viewer’s experience. Located in Birmingham, AL.
Paul W. Bryant Museum: Museum dedicated to the famous football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Very nice museum celebrating the coach and the history of Alabama football. The museum has the usual memorabilia – old sweaters, uniforms, and football but what really is unique is the digital touchscreen wall that has the roster, schedule, and results of every single game and team that Bear Bryant coached. Complete with pictures as well as a couple of highlights. Visit this museum in Tuscaloosa, AL.
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts: The mission of the Arts museum is to show its excellent collection, and it is very nicely presented. It is worth the visit just to see their superb Hopper, Sargent, Copley and Cassat, to name a few of the admirable works on display. This is also a great place to bring children with an interest in art as there are several child-oriented options, fun for adults, too. Admission is free; located in Montgomery, AL.
GulfQuest – National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico: This museum is the only one in the world dedicated to the rich traditions, history and culture of “America’s Sea”. With 90 interactive exhibits, simulators and theaters, GulfQuest is a family tourist destination and a signature attraction for Mobile, the state of Alabama and the entire Gulf Coast region. Located on the River, GulfQuest also provides waterfront dining in The Galley cafe. Visit this museum in Mobile, AL.

Alabama Festivals
Alabama Festivals are must attend events. Below, we have discovered a few worth noting and you might just want to check out, too.
Genghis Khan: The Great Civilizer, at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center: This Genghis Khan exhibit will recreate the amazing life of the legendary leader and the nomadic horse culture of Mongolia. Guests will enter the tents, battlegrounds and marketplaces of this vanished world and explore Genghis Khan’s life and those of his sons and grandsons during the rapid rise and decline of the Mongol Empire. Visitors will learn the stories, see the treasures and explore the culture, conquests and heritage of Genghis Khan’s 13th-century Mongol Empire and discover the man who first introduced the modern essentials of pants, paper money, forks, passports and much more. Enjoy this exhibit from Jan. 26th thru April 30 in Mobile, Alabama.
Mardi Gras Days in Mobile: Mobile is not only recognized as the location of the first-known American Mardi Gras celebration in 1703 (yes, even before New Orleans), but also as home to “America’s Family Mardi Gras” delighting both young and old from around town and across the nation. This magnificent celebration lasts over two and a half weeks and concludes on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent. For weeks, the streets of downtown Mobile are filled with the sights and sounds of live marching bands, brilliantly colored floats and, of course, teeming crowds of parade-goers. The floats are glowing spectacles manned by masked riders festooned in satin and sequins and armed with crowd-pleasing “throws” such as beads, MoonPies, doubloons and candy. Mardi Gras must be experienced to be fully understood, and Mobile is the perfect place beginning Mar. 5.
Bob Sykes BBQ & Blues: The annual Bob Sykes BBQ & Blues Festival, presented by the City of Bessemer, combines the best of blues music and legendary Bob Sykes BBQ. Events for all ages will be held at the beautiful DeBardeleben Park located in historic downtown Bessemer, Alabama from 12-8pm. Gates open at 11am. Expect to hear talented award winning local and national blues musicians. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket and set-up your spot for the day on April 27.
Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon: Pilots from across the U.S will participate! This festival will include balloon glows Friday and Saturday night, the world-famous Disc-Connected K-9’s Frisbee Dog Show, carnival rides, arts and crafts vendors, and great food and entertainment. The festival grounds, located at 18507 US Highway 98 West in Foley, AL are open Friday – 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. and Saturday – 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. in Foley on May 3 – 4.
Chilton County Peach Festival: Join in as Chilton County celebrates Alabama peaches. Pageants are held throughout the week, along with the Peach Run, art exhibitions, a cook-off, live music, parades, live and silent auctions, barbecue and much more. In central Alabama in late June.
Other festivals to enjoy in Alabama are: Thunder on the Mountain, July 4th in Birmingham; South Alabama Pro Rodeo Classic, mid- August in Ozark; The Battles for the Armory during November in Tallassee.

ISS: Science on Orbit:
Get a true sense of what it’s like to live and work in space as you walk through the space station in ISS: Science on Orbit. Experience a model of NASA’s Payload Operations Integration Center, where scientists and engineers on Earth manage the complex, science experiments that astronauts conduct on the International Space Station.
Saturn V Hall at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration:
Experience the mesmerizing view of a National Historic Landmark – an authentic Saturn V rocket – one of only three in the world, located in the Saturn V Hal of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. The hall showcases NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center contributions to historic, current and future space exploration.
Rocket Park:
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s Rocket Park was called “the finest rocket collection in the world” by Mercury astronaut John Glenn. In the park, 27 missiles and rockets show how Army rocketry launched America’s space program and gave rise to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Shuttle Park:
Explore the most complete chronology of launch vehicles in the country, including the world’s only fully-stacked Space Transportation System that includes two solid rocket boosters, genuine space shuttle main engine nozzles and a genuine external tank. The Pathfinder orbiter is on display in Shuttle Park and is flanked by a T-38, a twin-engine supersonic jet used in astronaut training, and the newest addition to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the Shuttle Training Aircraft, the only one of NASA’s four modified Gulfstream II aircraft on display anywhere in the world.
Brick Locator:
Visit the commemorative bricks in the Apollo Courtyard that surround the vertical Saturn V replica outside the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. Alumni and supporters of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center have given tribute to honor the innovative engineers and scientists who took us to the moon.
Huntsville is the second largest city in Alabama. Besides the Space museum, The University of Alabama offers great football, especially if you are a fan. Alabama State Capital: Montgomery
Founded in 1819, Montgomery is named for General Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War officer killed in the attack on Quebec. Though Montgomery passed away nearly 45 years before Alabama’s capital was established, he was thrust back in the news in 1819 when his home state of New York successfully convinced Quebec to return his remains. It’s unclear why a Southern settlement decided to name their city after a New York war hero, though the fact that several of the settlement’s original founders hailed from New England may have played some role in the decision-making.
In a strange coincidence, Alabama’s capital is located in Montgomery County, but though city and county share a moniker, they’re named for completely different people. While Montgomery city is named after Richard Montgomery, the county is named for Major Lemuel Montgomery, who died in 1814 while fighting the Creek Indians under Andrew Jackson. In a final twist, historians now believe the two Montgomerys may have been distantly related.
First White House of the Confederacy: Built in 1835 this “White House” served as the First White House for the Confederacy in 1861 and was occupied by Jefferson Davis and his family. Davis only spent 4 months here as ” the confederate president” and then moved to Richmond, VA. This house is well worth your time to view. It has all the bedrooms, sitting rooms etc perfectly preserved with furniture and artifacts from the time. The volunteers are extremely well versed in its history and are quick to kindly answer all questions.
You’ll walk in and immediately be met by a gentleman who introduces himself as Yankee Bob. He then will let you know that the self-guided tour was “free, but as we all know nothing is really free.” He will let you know that you’ll have to listen to him for a couple of minutes. He then started to talk about the history of the house and the Confederacy. You’ll find him to be extremely knowledgeable and full of energy. It was obvious that for him this wasn’t a job, but rather a passion. After talking about the house and the area for about 20 minutes you can pick up the self-guided tour books and walk around inside the house. Almost everything in the home is original from the period. It is very well maintained and much of the furniture layout was done by Mrs. Jefferson Davis when the association took over the home in 1900. Even if you are not a history buff, this is worth the time.
Martin Luther King’s home and parsonage: A recent visit to this modest house will give you an extraordinary insight into the civil rights era and its leader MLK. As a guide, Dr. Shirley Cherry is unique. It is not just her expansive knowledge but her ability to take you back in time that makes the tour such a wonderful experience. You will gain insights into the leaders such as Dr. King and you will hear about the behind the scenes heroes and be inspired by their actions. It is a terrific piece of history, a fascinating tour, and a very inspiring place to go when you need some encouragement about what one person can do. The most rewarding tour.
The Capital: When you take this guided tour; you’ll find the guide is very informative as to the history of the state of Alabama as well as its troubled civil rights history. You’ll learn quite a bit about George Wallace. You could meet the State Treasurer as well as the Secretary of State while you are there. Well worth a visit.
The Zoo: Small but well designed park with a lot packed in. Fun train ride, nice Pavilion, great shaded paths for hot summers. Truly, for a small park, it packs a big impact and is preferable to other Zoos you may have visited. Tons of animals. Love the otters. The old part of the park is in dire need of update though the reptile room and caged bird walks through are fun. The large animal enclosures are extremely small, especially for elephants and giraffes. You’ll love this park and enjoy every visit. Wish the city could expand this small gem.
Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s Museum: You’ll really enjoyed this visit. The museum is set in a previous home of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald which gives the place a lovely atmosphere. All visits are done with a tour guide – excellent. The museum houses a varied collection of letters, writings, paintings, books and artifacts either produced or collected by the Fitzgeralds.
Hank Williams Museum: Physically it is a small place, but if you take the time to read all the information it is a great collection. You could probably spend 1-2 hours here. Make sure you understand the photography and phone rules. Many of the exhibits are one of a kind and pictures/phones are not allowed inside the museum itself (except in the lobby). Overall, it is a great collection since Hanks career was so short. Very nice museum, full of personal items including blue Cadillac Hank died in. A very nice and very respectful tribute to one of the greatest singer/songwriters to ever live. They have a very nice gift shop full of great collectibles at reasonable prices. Museum is definitely worth a visit especially if you are a music fan!
