Rome:  The Eternal City of Rome, in whose name the Caesars sought to claim the world, opens for the visitor like a living museum, liberally dotted with fascinating ruins, surviving relics and archaeological sites. The centuries peel back with each new vista in this great city of gladiators, lunatic drivers and sumptuous pasta dishes. For a taste of the Baroque, visitors need only climb the famous Spanish Steps, walk through the Piazza Navona or toss a coin into the beautiful Trevi Fountain. Renaissance splendor is perhaps best revealed in the Pope’s residence, the Vatican Palace, or in Michelangelo’s efforts on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.

Florence:  The principal Tuscan city of Florence (Firenze) nestles below the wooded foothills of the Apennines, along the banks of the Arno River. The works of Botticelli, Michelangelo, Bruneschelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Boccaccio, Alberti, Masaccio, Donatello, Vasari and Fra Angelico imbue the city with the magnificence of their contribution to art and life. The Oltrarno (meaning ‘over the Arno’) area became the place from which the Medici ruled from the Palazzo Pitti. The magnificent Boboli Gardens were designed and laid out around it. The area surrounding Via Maggio and Piazza di Santo Spirito boasts a collection of other palazzi built during the 16th and 17th-centuries.

Portofino:  Claimed by Italy as the world’s finest small port, Portofino is famous for its beautiful views. Here in the Liguria province, fine dining is elevated to an art, and one of the area’s finest products is its rare olive oil.  From charming boutiques and cafes to the delightful little church San Giorgio, there’s plenty to do and see in beautiful Portofino. You might start with a stroll up to the old castle, which overlooks the picturesque harbor.

Monte-Carlo:  OOO-La, La – The Unofficial capital of glamorous and lavish Monaco, Monte Carlo is the epitome of wealth and glamour. The capital is a blend of towering high-rise buildings and narrow windy roads, boasting the legendary Monte-Carlo Casino, luxury hotels, elegant nightclubs and restaurants, views of the sparkling Mediterranean and of course, the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix.  Established in 1866, Monte-Carlo was named in honor of Prince Charles III and is the richest of the country’s four quarters. For years, Monte-Carlo has been the playground of the rich and famous, from Hollywood starlets to royalty from all corners of the globe. It is also one of Europe’s foremost holiday resorts, but certainly not for the humble backpacker. The city has several attractions, such as the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium, the Monaco Cathedral and the Prince’s Palace, several gardens, and other attractions centered on the country’s famous Royal Family, such as an exhibition of HSH Prince of Monaco’s private collection of classic cars.

Saint-Tropez:  There is little left of the medieval Provencal atmosphere of the original town, but behind the rows of yachts fronting the terraced cafés of the waterfront are some narrow, picturesque streets full of shops. The hub of the St Tropez town is the Place aux Herbes, a busy enclave of fish, fruit, vegetable and flower stalls, where the tourism office is located. From May to September, St Tropez is the wild holiday destination people imagine, but in the off season the town virtually shuts down, reverting to a quieter, calmer existence as just another charming French port town.

Ajaccio Corsica:  The capital of Corsica, the popular holiday destination of Ajaccio lies in a calm bay on the west coast of the rugged island, set against a backdrop of wooded hills. It is a relaxed rather than lively town and visitors come here on holiday to enjoy its wealth of cafés, restaurants and shops. The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, the town takes full advantage of its famous resident to lure tourists. Ajaccio is a good doorstep into the rest of the island, and the launching point for many Corsican holidays.

Rome:  From early Christian Basilicas to the Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Pantheon, the sequence of history trails back to the height of the Roman Empire.  It may sound like a city of contrasts, but Rome’s timeless magic lies in its ability to blend the old with the new.
