PLACE OF INTEREST

Branson

Over the years, Branson, an Ozark town in southwest Missouri known as a family vacation destination, has undergone a  massive rebuilding.  Its 76 Country Boulevard is famously lined with theaters, which once hosted mostly country music performers but today presents diverse entertainment options. Along the strip are the Marvel Cave, the Wild West-style Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction and Silver Dollar City, an 1800s-themed amusement park with live music, along with various restaurants, and other attractions.

Sight & Sound Theaters:  The nation’s largest Christian theatre company and one of the highest attended live theatres on the East Coast (Philadelphia) and in the Midwest. This inspiring family experience includes a majestic 2000-seat theatre, a massive 300-foot wrap-around stage, a professional cast, spectacular sets up to 40 feet high and a variety of live animals. Go back in time and witness the greatest stories of the Bible as they come to life right before your eyes.

This is a quote from a satisfied person, “Upon arrival the parking lot attendant ran up to the car to direct us to parking and told us it would be safer on getting out the car if we backed into the space. That was very thoughtful!  The staff inside were standing at the ready to help us out and constantly came to check on us once we were seated. The care and concern they showed was phenomenal. During intermission we were told we could select different seats if we wanted since it wasn’t completely full (though it was a nice crowd for a Tuesday).  The show itself was great! The props and characters were all very interesting and kept me wondering what was coming next. I love how they incorporated the fixtures throughout the theater, props, and lighting for the finale. I’ll leave it at that because I don’t want to give it all away. You must see it!”   Samson is now showing through the end of this year.  The shows rotate and some of the possibilities are Moses, Jesus, and Jonah.

The Haygoods:  The Haygood family sings country, pop, and gospel with an abundance of vocal talent and musical instrument expertise. Everyone in your group will enjoy most, if not all, of this production. Our personal favorite is the Mountain dancing, a combination of tap dance, mountain stomping and Irish clogging.  Laser lights, music, comedy and a good time. What a terrific group of musicians this family is. Clean fun and they looked like they were having as much fun as we were. It is easy to see why they are considered Branson’s best.

The Shepherd of The Hills:  This family-owned attraction features the famous outdoor theatre where guests are transported back to the late 1800’s and into the lives of the pioneers who settled this rugged area of Southwest Missouri. Based on Harold Bell Wright’s bestselling book the show just finished its 58th season. The Shepherd of the Hills is a time-tested favorite for all ages. During the day you can discover the views from Inspiration Tower or take an excursion on ATV’s. In November and December Old Matt’s Historic Homestead is transformed into a magical Christmas wonderland. The Trail of Lights is an animated, musical drive-thru of lights, sound and motion and is open 7 nights a week. There are millions of twinkling lights and animated displays that celebrate everything from the whimsical to beautiful displays celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. Come enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with us!  The owner is actively updating the grounds and bringing new and fun things to make us keep coming back and not just at Christmas.

Branson Landing Fountain Show: This is a great show! Fire and water synchronized with music! Free to all. Take a nice along the boardwalk while you wait for the fountains to go. They shoot off from noon till 9:00, every hour. The shops are fun and there is a variety of restaurants and shops to see after the show.

College of the Ozarks:  College of the Ozarks, known as “Hard Work U,” is more than a college. It’s a destination with tons of family-friendly activities, including two museums, an old-fashioned grist mill, fruitcake and jelly kitchen, stained glass studio, and exquisite 4-star dining at Dobyns Dining Room in The Keeter Center. It’s a great way to spend a day while you are in the Branson area. The only thing that requires admission is the Ralph Foster Museum ($6 Adults, $5 Seniors, and Free to all 18 and under). Dobyns Dining Room offers a farm to table experience without breaking the bank. If you don’t do anything but visit the College of the Ozarks it will be worth it. It’s the best kept secret in Branson if not the United States. You can even get a room there, but you need book way in advance. Great tours and excellent food. You’ll be inspired by the focus on ethics and patriotism as well as hard work.  We recommend coming to learn why this unique college is nationally known.

Titanic Museum:  Everyone knows the name Titanic! Everyone knows Titanic struck an iceberg! And everyone knows Titanic was lost! She sat on the bottom of the ocean for 75 years before they found her in 1985. A second expedition to the wreck site went out in 1986 and that expedition was co-led by the owner of this museum. The artifacts you see throughout the ship are REAL and valued at over $4 million dollars. You’ll be able to touch a growing iceberg, experience the 28-degree water, try and steer the ship and pay tribute to the 2,208 passengers and crew that were on the Titanic. They have ‘Crew’ members stationed all over and they are incredibly knowledgeable about everything in the museum. There are a lot of hands on activities to keep kids entertained as well as the adults At the beginning of the tour you are also handed a card with the name of a person who was actually on the Titanic, and at the end you find out if your person survived the sinking or not. You can also find your person’s name, picture and history throughout the museum if you are lucky. Plan on taking your time and not rushing through. There is so much to look and see and listen to.

A fun thing to do is Ride the Ducks!  These are military amphibious, refurbished vehicles in which you can take a tour of the city and countryside.  The driver allows you to experience both land and water by traveling to a nearby lake.  At the end of the ride, you are given a certificate of accomplishment.  What fun!

You want to fly into Springfield Airport and pick up a car to get to Branson.  Travelkatz will be happy to put this vacation package together for you.  Just give us a call at 352-277-7300 or contact us on our website or Facebook.

JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI

City of Jefferson (colloquially called Jefferson City) was named for Thomas Jefferson, whose Louisiana Purchase secured the region that would become Missouri. A close runner up: Missouriopolis. One extremely enthusiastic local newspaper wrote, in defense of the name, “Men of letters throughout Europe and Americas, hearing it pronounced, will know what is spoken of and where it is. Letters started from London, Paris or Boston, will arrive at their destination without mistakes, and without the circumlocution of a tedious address, without making a pilgrimage to forty places of like names, or having a treatise of geography written on their backs to keep on the right road.” But despite that passionate plea, officials decided Jefferson was a more fitting name.

This is one of the first sites passed by Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition, and the city is close to both the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and KATY Trail State Park. The city is also home to the imposing Missouri State Penitentiary, the “bloodiest 47 acres in America.”

Missouri State Penitentiary:  Seeing this place, in all its ugly glory, and hearing the long and bloody history of the prison, should keep most any person from doing the crime! Dale is a knowledgeable and entertaining guide, he is also an active employee of the prison system, so he is able to bring reality to the stories he tells. They offer 1, 2,3-hour daylight tours and several late night/overnight ghost tours, which are excellent. Lots to see, from the early buildings to the later ones, gas chamber room, dungeons (The Hole), area where the criminally insane were housed, etc. A good deal of up and down stairs, so be ready for that. Also, heed the warning to dress properly, the buildings are old and not heated, and with sometimes 2-3-foot-thick walls, they hold the cold.  May be a bit intense for the pre-teen set. The teens should enjoy, especially if they have the right attitude, and can understand the gravity of the prison and what it meant to be there.  You will come away with a new appreciation for the work our prison guards across the country do, in protecting both the general public, and the inmates in their care.

Missouri State Capitol:  The Missouri State Capital is an amazing place. The Missouri State Capitol dominates a bluff overlooking the Missouri River and the bronze statue atop its 238-foot-high dome is the first thing that comes into view for visitors of Jefferson City. This state capital is right on the river and if you stand at the top of the hill you can see a lot, and if you lucky to get to the top of the capital you can see amazing things. Missouri’s history and laws are signed in this monument and the interior is beautiful. The history of Missouri is painted all around the dome of the capital and there are amazing pieces of art displayed all in the inside.
You can enjoy seeing the historical rooms like the Senate Chamber and the House Chamber. They are beautiful rooms and display great craftsmanship.  This is worth taking a tour there so that you can witness amazing art, architecture, and history in the making.

Lewis and Clark Monument Trailhead Plaza:  The Lewis and Clark Monument is an American symbol. These few statues are cool to visit and show a little history. Take a group picture with these cool and adventurous guys. This is a place that you would not spend much time at, but defiantly take a minute to look at. The kids would most likely love to try and climb these and have great memories. Lewis & Clark Monument and the Governor’s Garden can both be seen and appreciated in less than an hour if you are short of time. While the Trailhead Plaza can be appreciated year-round, the Governors Garden is at its peak of beauty when the flowers are blooming. We suggest stopping at the front desk inside the capital to get a map for a walking tour for all the outside monuments around the capital.

Colonel Alvin R Lubker Memorial Safety and Education Center:  This museum is located in the bottom of the General Headquarters building of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. This activity is free. There are old cars there, some artifacts seized from Bonnie and Clyde’s hideout in Joplin, MO, and there are many informative displays concerning train safety, drinking and driving, and much, much more. This is also the home of Otto, the talking car!! (He’s a model a ford) there are movies dedicated to any age that you can watch in the onsite theater. If you have a large group, call ahead if you can. The museum guide will give you a brief history of the patrol and is always there to answer questions. All children receive a goody bag, compliments of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Don’t miss this free, informative, and family fun activity!

Canyon Road: It is very impressive to behold the number and scope of the artistic endeavors along both sides of this remarkable street. There are artists creating offerings in all manner of material including, pottery, iron work, wood carving, jewelry, and of course painting. While many items are quite expensive, a closer look should produce enough affordable items to make a stroll to Canyon Road.

Jefferson City is served by Lambert-St. Louis Intl Airport (Saint Louis, MO).  It’s an easy flight from Tampa.  Rental cars are certainly available.  TravelKatz is ready to help make this a fun, memorable vacation for just give us a call at 352-277-7300 or go to travelkatz.com to find out more.

TravelKatz Vacation Testimonials

I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful job you did organizing our trip. It absolutely was the best vacation I have ever had. This was my first time over seas and what a wonderful experience. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I am going through “James” withdraw today. He was an amazing tour guide and fit in so well with our group. I will definitely recommend you if I know of anyone thinking of going over to Ireland. Your country is so beautiful and everyone is so friendly. I can’t thank you enough for everything.

Jack & JoAnn Douglass, Miami, FL

I appreciated all the information that was given before I left on the trip. Our Guide, Jerry filled in all the other interesting information on what to expect. I felt safe, well feed and learned so much from a trip 45 mins from USA…I want people to see the beauty of the country, the people and their wonderful culture. I so loved the music. I am playing the CD’s often that I bought from the musicians. A trip I would like to do again. Thank you.
